SNAP.

SpaceX is a great example of a company with grand vision, clear plans, and an effective way to keep Elon from sticking his ass into it all the time.

Can you elaborate for us plebes who don’t follow rocket science?

still think putting another man/woman/whatever on another celestial body is a stupid waste of money. should be working on rocket efficiency/cost effectiveness

SpaceX is giving a presentation on their new Starship Mk1 rocket tomorrow. This guy is implying that SpaceX should perhaps be more focused on getting the Crew Dragon to the ISS instead of messing around with Musk’s vanity project.

This may be true, but it seems to be suspiciously ignoring the fact that the more expensive Boeing commercial crew competitor is just as far behind, and NASA just signed a new contract with Lockheed for their Orion capsule (which in theory NASA has been managing), despite the fact Orion has been in development for 15 years and is massively behind schedule and over budget.

A little birdie told me Lockheed and the SLS capsule aren't exactly on schedule either

We are going to use proven, off the shelf technology to ensure timely and cost effective access to space...

Yep, not working out well.

There’s something about “We need something safer than the shuttle, so we’ll make a core stage based on the shuttle main tank (which was responsible for the loss of Columbia, though granted Orion will be in a less vulnerable place), and shuttle boosters (which were responsible for the loss of Challenger, though hopefully the figured out how to fix that beyond “don’t launch in the cold”)“...

Regardless of the safety implications though, the program has been a mess. And I really doubt giving Lockheed another “ cost plus” contract for Orion is going make things happen quickly. It seems like a recipe for things coming in late and at much greater cost, especially as NASA seems happy to pay out performance bonuses to their contractors even when performance targets were missed badly.

At this rate Lockheed’s fusi on reactor is going to be ready sooner.

Or alternate heavy-lift technologies. Every year we fall a year behind in achieving the Star Trek future - and a year closer to the Matrix/Terminator one.

The entire history of humanity tell you the future we’re headed for. It’s how we do.

Nah ... we just need to get enough smart and passionate people together to create the breakthroughs.

Creative passionate people will continue to make breakthroughs. Society will decide whether or not to listen to them (it won’t).
